FAQ
Q. How often are lessons?
A.  We hold lessons once a week, 4 to 5 times a month depending upon the number of weeks on the month. We are closed on major holidays.

Q. Why don't you offer to teach lessons at our house?
A. We find that the main reason our lessons are successful is that are held in a safe, well equipped, professional environment, free of distraction like TV, pets and siblings.  Also, coming to a real music studio for a lesson helps the student realize that this is their special time for focused learning on their instrument.

Q. Do you offer recitals?
A. We offer two youth recitals a year.  One in the spring and one in the fall.  Friends and family are encouraged to attend.  Youth students also have opportuinites to participate in local and state competitions and festivals.

Q. What is  a good age to start lessons?
A. Adults can start any instrument at any time.  Their sucess is based on how willing an adult is to commited to practicing. Children can start at various times in their stages of development.  If a child is put into lessons too soon they may feel overwhelmed and frustrated and want to stop.  The last thing you want to do is turn a child off music lessons just because they had one unpleasant experience. The following are age recommmedations we suggest to be successful in determining the age a child should start.

Piano  age 4 - (see Music for Little Mozarts) with parents assistance. Guidance training for the parent is available through course studies.

Guitar age requirement is 8 years old.  Guitar playing requires a fair amount of pressure on the fingertips from pressing the strings.  Bass guitar students generally are 10 years old and older.

Trumpet age requirement is age 9.  This is due to the amount of  lung capacity needed to produce a tone and  in some cases the size  the instrument compared to
the child.

Voice age requirement is 8 years old.

Any parent wanting their child to begin before the suggested ages will have to have full detailed evaluation. The teacher's decision is final.

Q. I think my child is ready for lessons but I don't know what instrument to start him on?
A.  If your child is new to music lessons, the piano is the best musical instrument to start on.  This is especially true if the child hasn't drawn to a certain instrument.
  • The piano is the easiest instrument to produce a sound on. A gentle press of the keys gives an instant response.
  • It is a great instrument to learn theory and to learn how to read music.

Q. What instruments do Major Scales Studios teach?
A.  We offer instruction on trumpet, piano, and guitar.  We are updating our facilites regularly so check back often as this list grows.

Q. Do I have to pay when I'm not at my lesson?
A. If you go to a private school or take college courses you would not receive a refund or credit if you miss a day.  It's the same at our studio.  Our trained instructors count on their students to attend their lessons and the income derived from that and have reserved a specific time in their week only for them.  As a courtesy to the teachers that work at Major Scales Studios we must ask for a 24 hour notice for absences and offer only 4 make-ups per semester.

Q. What if my child has a soccer game or we are going on vacation for a week, do we have to pay for the entire month?
A. Yes, payment in full is expected. We offer 4 make up lessons per semester, per student, with a minimum 24 hour notice of an absence.  The make up lesson is scheduled in the absence of other students, at the discretion of the studio.  They have no monetary value and do not carry over to the next semester.
